The Alcan Winter Rally

The longest, coldest rally in the world and one of the last great automotive adventure

The Alcan Winter Rally

The Alcan Winter Rally is the longest, coldest rally in the world and one of the last great automotive adventures.  In the spirit of the historic marathon rallies, the race covers over 5,000 miles (8,050 km) in 10 days.  The race starts in Kirkland, WA, and travels north of the Arctic Circle before heading south to Anchorage, AK, for the finish.  Averaging 500+ miles per day on the frozen roads of the north, the teams encounter -40° temperatures, long days, wildlife, ice roads, little sleep, and life-threatening risks.  Can the teams complete the challenge, or will their adventure be stopped short?

The Competitors

The competitors come from all over the country, from all walks of life.   They seem to have a particular taste for a challenge, but do they have the right stuff to survive the frozen environment, locked in a car for ten days with one or more other people in a traveling circus covering 500+ miles a day while avoiding the hypothermia, moose, trucks, plows, and other competitors on the frozen roads?  All while trying to stay on time to the tenth of a second during the Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) stages.

The Locals

Driving on ice or snow is a show-stopper for some, causing them to stay inside where it is warm and dry.  The locals you meet during the Alcan Winter Rally are more likely to share a story about how it was much colder a week or two ago or cautionary tales about the impact of the brutal, relentless, freezing weather.   The friendliness and warmth of the locals is a refreshing contrast to the harsh winter environment.  There is something quite special about the hearty people in this lovely area.
